Abstract

This paper explores the premise that privately owned open space is vital for meeting future recreation demands in the urban Northeast. A case study in the Great Meadows of the Connecticut River in the Hartford, Connecticut metropolitan area is used to illustrate the challenges in promoting recreational access and open space preservation in a privately-owned held farming and riparian forest landscape. This case study includes a survey of local landowners about allowing recreation on their land. The conclusion of this paper reports on the discussion generated by the presentation of this paper at an NERR roundtable session.
