Ips typographus and Ophiostoma polonicum versus Norway spruce: joint attack and host defense

Abstract

During the years 1971 to 1982, major epidemics of the spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus L., occurred in southeastern Norway and adjoining parts of Sweden. The outbreaks were triggered by large-scale wind-felling and long-lasting drought (Worrell 1983). This "epidemic of the century," hitting our important timber tree, Norway spruce, Picea abies (L), stimulated research in Norway and other countries of the region on the relationship between the beetle, its fungal symbionts, and the host tree.
