Abstract
The geographic expansion of urban and suburban development and the influx of residential and recreational development into previously forested areas are growing concerns for natural resource managers. This project sought to: identify and characterize urbanization and forest fragmentation over large areas with the detail and accuracy required for studies of wildlife habitat, plant composition, and water quality; identify potential effects of urbanization and fragmentation on water quality; develop appropriate methods for achieving the first two objectives, with a focus on: identifying ways of describing and quantifying urbanization and forest fragmentation that are scale- and issue-appropriate, reasonably accurate, consistent over time, and relevant to management; and identifying measures of and standards for accuracy assessment.
