Abstract

The scientific name, Strix occidentalis, translates as "owl of the west," an appropriate name for this inhabitant of western forests. The subspecies found in Arizona, the Mexican Spotted Owl, is S. o. lucida - "light" or "bright" owl of the west. This race is generally lighter in color than Spotted Owls elsewhere in the range. The Mexican Spotted Owl can be distinguished from other subspecies on the basis of genetic evidence as well (Barrowclough and Gutierrez 1990).
