Abstract

Over the decade from 1976 to 1986, the trend among southern enterprises that process softwood timer has been to build larger operations to reduce unit cots. Minimum efficient plant size, as determined by survivor analysis, has increased from 1,000 to 1,500 tons per day from pulpmills, 100 to 250 million square feeet per year for softwood plywood plants, and 20 to 50 million board feet per year for pine sawmills.
