Abstract

Severe wildfires in Florida in 1998 demonstrated the complexities that the wildland-urban interface presents for a diverse group of people who live and work there. These fires cost millions of dollars in suppression costs, reduced tourism, and damaged timber, businessess, and homes. Entire communities had to be evacuated, and many elderly people and others afflicated with respiratory illnesses needed medical attention. Forest ecosystems were endangered.
