Abstract

This forest survey of Oklahoma is the fifth conducted by the forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) unit of the Southern Forest Experiment Station. The previous survey was made in 1976. Normally the next survey would have been 1986, but to aid the state in its current forest resource planning an abbreviated midcycle survey was made in 1981. A new sampling procedure based on prior survey data and current photography was used to develop forest resource estimates for this midcycle or 5-year survey in Oklahoma. The midcycle technique involves re-measurement of about 10 percent of the forest plots and costs roughly 15 percent as much as regular surveys. Reliability of the estimates, however, is considerably lower than regular surveys.
