Abstract

Calcium cyanamide, a nitrogenous fertilizer that also acts as an herbicide, was evaluated over a 3-year period for use in establishing planted yellow-poplar on an old-field site. Results of this study show that first and second year growth of yellow-poplar can be increased by nbroadcasting CaCN2 around the seedlings. When applied at rates of 400 to 500 pounds of nitrogen per acre, CaCN2 eliminated competing ground cover and supplied nitrogen to the seedlings that promoted vigor and rapid early growth.
