Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide a practical guide to the management of northern hardwoods - principally beech, birch, and maple-in the Northeast. The guide was designed to provide the kind of information that is needed not only for long-term management planning, but also for short-term silvicultural prescriptions for specific timber stand conditions. The guide is limited to silvicultural recommendations primarily for timber production. However, secondary forest uses such as recreation, water, and wildlife habitat are considered wherever pertinent.
