Abstract

This first intensive forest inventory of Alaska's Copper River Valley found a commercial forest area of 287,800 acres with 303.8 million cubic feet of growing stock. Additionally, a noncommercial stratum was examined that had substantial standing volume but did not meet the growth criteria for commercial forest land. This stratum contained 152,800 acres with a volume of 157.9 million cubic feet. Because of the distance from population centers and the general low quality of the timber, the Copper River stands probably would be marginal suppliers to the world market.
