Human dimensions in ecosystem management: a USDA Forest Service perspective

Abstract

For many decades, the natural resource profession has approached the management of public lands as exclusively a natural science endeavor requiring purely technical solutions. With the adoption of an ecosystem management philosophy, the USDA Forest Service has acknowledged the centrality of people in land management policy and decision-making. This paper explores the human dimension of ecosystem management, with emphasis on the role of social science research in the implementation of ecosystem management.
