Primer registro de Empidonax fulvifrons en Nicaragua

Abstract

English title: First documented report of buff-breasted fl ycatcher Empidonax fulvifrons in Nicargua. A buff-breasted flycatcher (Empidonax fulvifrons) was observed on 4 January 2008 in Loma Fría, Dipilto Municipality, Department of Nueva Segovia. The bird was sited in a pasture with scattered pines (Pinus oocarpa) adjacent to a pine-oak forest. It formed part of a mixed-species foraging fl ock comprised of 25 species and 40 individuals. The flock included species characteristic of the pine-oak ecosystem: greater pewee (Contopus pertinax), grace’s warbler (Dendroica graciae), townsend’s warbler (Dendroica townsendi), hermit warbler (Dendroica occidentalis) and black-headed siskin (Carduelis notata). The flycatcher was easily identifi ed by its diminutive size, rich, cinnamon-buff wash across the breast and brownish overall plumage, unique within its genus. The species is undergoing a decline in the northern portions of its range, mostly owing to reoccurring wildfires in its breeding grounds.
