Abstract

This article gives general guidelines for selection, installation, finishing, and maintenance of wood shakes and shingles. The authors gathered information from a variety of sources: research publications on wood finishing, technical data sheets from paint manufacturers, installation instructions for shake and shingle siding, and interviews with experts having experience constructing and inspecting shake and shingle siding. If research reports could not be found, the recommendations are based on opinions of experts and practices that have been shown to give good service life for shakes and shingles. More detailed information is available from shake and shingle suppliers, paint manufacturers, and the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau (CSSB).
