Abstract

The speed of the global recovery from the worst economic crisis since the 1930s varies significantly by region; growth is much faster in the emerging economies than in the advanced economies. Economic growth in the coming year is likely to remain weak in North America and western Europe, as austerity is implemented to address increasing sovereign debt levels. Given weak growth in the advanced economies, unemployment levels, especially long-term and youth unemployment, are likely to remain high for several more years.
