Statistically Valid Planting Trials

Abstract

More than 100 million tree seedlings are planted each year in Latin America, and at least ten time'that many should be planted Rational control and development of a program of such magnitude require establishing and interpreting carefully planned trial plantings which will yield statistically valid answers to real and important questions. Unfortunately, many forest tree plantations being established today in this region are conceived and executed by men completely without gtatistical background, or by men whose training in statistics took place in the distant past. Many of these men fully recognize the advantages to be derived from proper experimental design and would like to establish their trials in a manner permitting later valid statistical tests of the results obtained. In many cases, however, there is no qualified statistician whom they can consult; and, for one reason or another, they are unable themselves to obtain an adequate statistical background. It is for such men, men who want to establish properly designed trial plantings but who are completely unfamiliar with statistical theory, that this paper was prepared.
