Abstract
Little information is available concerning the initial stages of forest regeneration following intensive harvesting of central hardwood stands in the northeastern part of the range. Establishment of commercial species, density, and rate of biomass accumulation of the regeneration are of major concern to both foresters and landowners contemplating a harvest. To help provide this information, a 6-ha forest stand dominated by the central hardwood forest type of Connecticut was mechanically whole-tree clearcut in 1981. Intensive sampling of the regeneration including herbs, shrubs, tree seedlings, and stump sprouts was conducted the first, third, fifth, and tenth years after cutting. This paper will discuss the development of the stand over the first ten years following clearcutting.
