Abstract

The Pennsylvania elk herd has grown to the size where a hunting season is being considered. Visitors to the principal elk viewing areas were asked their opinions about an elk hunt. Their responses were analyzed with respect to their personal profile and the characteristics of their visit. While roughly half the public supports a hunt, specific subgroups were found to have strong opinions on either side of the issue. People who accept hunting as a game management tool were more likely to approve of the proposed elk season.
