The forest resources of Iowa

Abstract

This report presents the results of a survey of the forests of Iowa, a part of the national survey of forest resources. The purposes of this survey are: 1. To make a field inventory of the present supply of standing timber. 2. To find out how fast this supply is being increased through growth. 3. To find out how much it is being diminished through industrial and domestic uses, fire, insects, disease, and other factors. 4. To determine the present consumption of forest products. 5. To interpret and correlate these findings to aid in the formulation of private and public forest policies. This survey was the first intensive inventory of the forests in Iowa so no accurate measure of changes in forest area and timber volumes is possible. Resurveys of the forests in the Central States are scheduled for 12-year intervals. Reliable comparisons will be possible as these remeasurements are completed.
