Abstract

This paper was aimed at establishing the relations between some soil properties and the growth of P. taeda on its main area of commercial plantation in Argentine Mesopotamia. It was hypothesized that main cause of productivity reduction is soil depth and effective plant- available soil volume rather than nutrient content. The study area was located in Corrientes and Misiones provinces from 28º 30’ S to 25º 30’ S. Thirty-one sites were selected , in all of which : 1- soil samples were obtained for nutrients and bulk density determination, 2- dasometric variables were measured and Site Index (IS) was calculated, and 3- green leaves on trees were sampled for C, N and P content. Statistical analysis was performed using INFOSTAT 2.0. The sites were subdivided in 3 soil-climate groups: 1) sites on northern red soils, 2) sites on northern stony soils, and 3) sites on southern red soils. P. taeda plantation growth was lower (lower IS) in stony soils richer in nutrients with lower effective depth and lower volume with the fine fraction. In the north , the greatest nutrient offer of stony soils compared with red ones did not show a response of increase in foliar nutrient concentration. Both lower water retention and lower soil volume for plant roots were the main growth limiting factors on stony soils. The southern area showed the best growth results (higher IS) on deep red soils with similar concentration and content of nutrients.
