Abstract

The approach for the biological control of hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), Adelges tsugae Annand, has been to release multiple species of host-specific predators in order to reduce HWA populations below damaging thresholds. Beetles in the genus Laricobius prey excusively on adelgids and have life histories matched closely to that of their prey. Thus, this group has high potential for biological control of adelgids. The genus has 21 recognized species—1 native to Europe, 3 native to North America, and 17 native to Asia.
