Abstract

The chemical constituents of honey locust, Gleditsia triacanthos L., leaves were investigated as feeding stimulants for larvae of Homodaula anisocentra Meyrick. A water-soluble fraction evoked a significant feeding response. Several sugars and amino acids were present in this extract, but only sucrose and fructose stimulated feeding significantly; several amino acids stimulated feed-ing to a lesser degree. The presence of other active watersoluble constituents is probable, but none was isolated during this study. A chloroform-soluble fraction from the leaves apparently synergized the activity of sugars and other water-soluble constituents but was relatively inactive itself.
