Abstract

For many decades fertile bottomlands in the Southeastern Coastal Plain have supplied lumbermen with high-quality hardwood sawtimber. With the recent development of pulpwood markets and higher stumpage rates, management of hardwood stands finally has entered the realm of possibility. Although commercial hardwood management is still in its infancy, research in bottom-land hardwoods has been in progress for more than 15 years at the Santee Experimental Forest.
