Site Preparation and fertilizer increase pine growth on soils compacted in logging

Abstract

Tree-length logging with rubber-tired skidders compacted the soil on a poorly drained site in the South Carolina coastal plain. Soil compaction reduced loblolly pine (Pinus taedaL.) seedling growth but not survival. Bedding or a moderate amount of fertilizer improved four-year growth on compacted soil, and these treatments applied in combination produced the best seedling growth. A greater response to fertilizer was obtained on compacted soil than on uncompacted soil.
