Abstract
On a Lower Coastal Plain site in Georgia, unburned plots and plots that had received a low-intensity broadcast burn were dr11rn chopped, bedded, and machine planted to slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii). Measurements through 6 years after planting suggested that burning had little or no effect on survival, fusiform rust infection, overtopping, or growth of pine seedlings. Independent of the effects of burning, pine growth was significantly reduced by early, transitory overtopping and by proximity to blue stem grasses or bitter gall berry.
