Abstract

Seasonal moisture content cycles in selected understory shrubs of eastern North Carolina pocosins were observed over two successive growing seasons. Each species had a characteristic pattern of moisture variation which was closely duplicated over two annual growth cycles. North-south location of the sample area and proximity to the seacoast were related to the timing of the annual moisture content cycles. Moisture content was lowest in most species during the spring, just before the appearance of new growth.
