Abstract

Through the application of silvicultural research, the forests of the South that were devastated by aggressive harvesting in the early 20th century have been restored to become the most productive and sustainable forests in the world. The development of this research capability and its application throughout the South is documented, and the role of the Biennial Southern Silvicultural Research Conference is discussed.
