Quantifying greenhouse gas sources and sinks in cropland and grazing land systems

Abstract

This chapter provides methodologies and guidance for reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and sinks at the entity scale for cropland and grazing land systems:

Section 3.1 provides an overview of cropland and grazing land systems management practices and their resulting GHG emissions, system boundaries and temporal scale, a summary of the selected methods, data requirements and sources, and estimating GHG emissions. Section 3.2 provides the estimation methods. A single method is provided for each of the GHG emission sources (and sinks), based on the best available method for application in an operational system for entity-scale reporting. A single method was chosen to ensure consistency in emission estimation by all reporting entities.

Two appendixes accompany this chapter, summarized below:

Appendix 3A provides the rationale and technical documentation for the methods as well as a discussion on GHG intensity calculations. Appendix 3B summarizes research gaps for estimating GHG emissions in cropland and grazing lands that could provide a basis for future development of the methods in this chapter. Additional background information on the impact of cropland and grazing land management are available in the 2014 report.
