Abstract
Significant research has been conducted on the development and use of hardwood resources in engineered wood materials and products. This research focused on utilizing undervalued hardwoods for applications that take advantage of their excellent strength properties. Some of the results from this research have been implemented by industry, and additional research has been initiated and is on-going. To bring together industry leaders and scientists, Mississippi State University and the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, led a workshop on this topic in 2023. The objectives of the workshop were to (1) review recent research conducted on the development and use of engineered hardwood materials and products; (2) engage industry leaders to help guide our research programs, and (3) prepare a corresponding research needs assessment. This report summarizes the proceedings from that workshop. It includes the following: a summary of key findings, abstracts and/or copies of presentations made, a list of participating organizations and attendees, and the agenda for the workshop. It also includes several noteworthy industry publications on this important topic.
