Abstract

As the need for intensive management of timberlands becomes more evident, the effect of initial plantation spacing and/or early thinning on subsequent stand development is of increasing interest and importance to the land manager. Douglas-fir stands planted in 1925 at Wind River, near Carson, Wash., have been observed periodically for over 40 years and provide an increasingly valuable record of benefits derived from fairly wide, uniform spacing.
