Abstract

Forests are essential to the long-term well-being oflocal populations, Nations, and the earth's biosphere. The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), which met in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, focused world attention on the importance of sustainable forest management as a key component of sustainable development. UNCED is also popularly known as the Earth Summit or the Rio Summit.) In adopting the Statement of Forest Principles and Chapter 11 of Agenda 21, UNCED recognized the importance of sustainably managing all types of forests, including temperate and boreal forests in order to meet the needs of present and future generations.
