Forest industry in the North, 2018: results from the USDA Forest Service, Timber Products Output survey

Abstract
The first annual Timber Products Output survey was completed for the northern United States for the 2018 production year. We surveyed a randomly selected sample of 1,546 primary wood-using mills from a total population of 2,941 active mills. We received 927 responses, for a 60 percent cooperation rate. Industrial roundwood production (harvested and utilized) in the region was an estimated 2,421.8 million cubic feet (MMCF). Saw logs accounted for 51 percent of production. Pulpwood accounted for 31 percent of production. Hardwood species accounted for 72 percent of roundwood production. Regionwide in 2018, the production volume occurred over 169.7 million acres of timberland, for an average of 14.3 cubic feet of roundwood production per acre of timberland. County-level production intensity in the region ranged from 0 to 1,196 cubic feet per acre of timberland. The processing of industrial roundwood generated 982.6 MMCF of mill residues, or 23.6 million green tons. Forty-two percent of the mill residues by volume were used for fuel byproducts, 19 percent for fiber by-products, and 37 percent for other various by-products (e.g., charcoal, animal bedding, mulch).
