Abstract

Fire control and exclusion have led to an increase in the non-commercial midstory and understory components of forest stands on the Croatan National Forest near the coast of North Carolina. The growth of this vegetation has created a fire risk in the wildland-urban interface. The use of a mechanical fuel management treatment is being explored in areas where fire cannot be safely implemented.
