Abstract
Effects of overstory thinning and fertilization with ammonium nitrate in overstocked stands of oak (Quercus spp.) were investigated. Total soil N was significantly increased by overstory thinning. Slight increases in total soil N resulted from fertilization, but these changes were not significant. However, fertilization significantly increased N uptake and understory production over the span of the study. These increaseswere greatest at the 40 percent stocking level and least in nonthinned stands.
