Nitrogen fertilization and thinning of oak stands in the Ozarks: effects on soil nitrogen, growth, and nitrogen uptake of understory vegetation

Abstract

Effects of overstory thinning and fertilization with ammonium nitrate in overstocked stands of oak (Quercus spp.) were investigated. Total soil N was significantly increased by overstory thinning. Slight increases in total soil N resulted from fertilization, but these changes were not significant. However, fertilization significantly increased N uptake and understory production over the span of the study. These increaseswere greatest at the 40 percent stocking level and least in nonthinned stands.
