Abstract
Existing information about site quality relationships for shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata Mill.) in the Ozark-Ouachita Highlands is reviewed in this paper. Estimates of site quality, whether from direct tree measurements or indirect estimates based on soil and site features, are onlylocal observations for many points on the landscape. To be of value to the land manager, a system of site quality evaluation based on identifiable units of the landscape must be devised. Physiographic site classification systems may provide the basis for reliable site quality evaluation in the Ozark-Ouachita area.
