Abstract
The fir decay equation for Oregon and Washington was used to predict stem decay in 12 grand fir (
Abies grandis (Dougl. ex D. Don) Lindl.) stands in the Clearwater region of northern Idaho. These 12 stands represented a range in geographic and stand characteristic variation. All 12 observed decay percentages were within their associated 95-percent prediction intervals. We therefore concluded that the fir decay equation for Oregon and Washington can be used to estimate stem decay in 40- to 90-year-old grand fir stands in the Clearwater region. Information also is presented on decay biology, hazard-rating techniques, and stand management recommendations.
