Effects of fire on deer habitat in the southeast

Abstract

Based on the literature on cattle range as well as that on deer habitat, it appears that burning temporarily increased the crude protein and P contents and the palatibility of most plants. It temporarily decreases quantity and fruiting of understory shrubs. All changes are influenced by the season of burning. The many site and stand conditions which exist in southern forests leave considerable room for further reasearch, particularly in the Piedmont and Mountains where few studies have been conducted.
