- There is currently a request from landowners in southeastern USA to provide a non-destructive tool that can differentiate the quality between stands of 25 and 30 years of age subjected to different thinning treatments. A typical site with various thinning regimes was used to vary the wood quality and to determine whether acoustics had the ability to seperate for differences at a given age and local geography. A stand at age 29 with three different spacing (prior thinning) levels was chosen. Three hundred trees (100 per treatment) were randomly selected and acoustically tested for sound...AuthorsCharles Essien, Qingzheng Cheng, Brian K. Via, Edward F. - CORRIM, the Consortium for Research on Renewable Industrial Materials (www.corrim.org), has derived life-cycle inventory (LCI) data for nine major wood products and four wood production regions in the United States (US). The LCI data cover forest regeneration through to final product at the mill gate. CORRIM’s LCI studies have included both structural and nonstructural wood products. This report focuses on the average North American production of hardboard and engineered wood siding and trim (EWST). Hardboard and EWST are in the same composite wood product category and in this report will...AuthorsMaureen Puettmann, Richard Bergman, Elaine OneilKeywordsSourceCORRIM Final Report. - Recent work has highlighted the importance of movement of chemicals and ions through the wood cell wall. This movement depends strongly on moisture content and is necessary for structural damage mechanisms such as fastener corrosion and wood decay. Here, we present the first measurements of electrical resistance of southern pine at the subcellular level as a function of wood moisture content by using a 1-um-diameter probe. In latewood, measurements were taken in both the secondary cell wall (S2) and the cell corner compound middle lamella (CCCML). In earlywood, measurements were only...AuthorsSamuel L. - Sulfite pretreatment to overcome the recalcitrance of lignocelluloses (SPORL) promises to provide efficient bioconversion of woody biomass into bioethanol and lignin co-products. Results from several laboratory and pilot-scale studies are presented to demonstrate SPORL performance, with comparisons to competing technologies. Excellent ethanol yields of up to approximately 80% theoretical, based on glucan, mannan, and xylan content of wood, were achieved at titers over 40 g/L. This high productivity was accomplished using low cellulase loadings, 26 mL/kg wood, and without detoxification,...AuthorsJunyong Zhu, Chao Zhang, Roland L. Gleisner, Carl J. - Big-leaf mahogany is the world’s most valuable widely traded tropical timber species and Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) has been applied as a tool for discriminating its wood from similar species using multivariate analysis. In this study four look-alike timbers of Swietenia macrophylla (mahogany or big-leaf mahogany), Carapa guianensis (crabwood), Cedrela odorata (cedar or cedro) and Micropholis melinoniana (curupixá) have been successfully discriminated using NIRS and Partial Least Squares for Discriminant Analysis using solid block and milled samples. Species identification models...AuthorsMaria C.J. Bergo, Tereza C.M. Pastore, Vera T.R. Coradin, Alex C. Wiedenhoeft, Jez W.B. BragaKeywordsSourceIAWA Journal 37(3), 2016: 420-430Year2016
- Although not yet seen as common practice, building with cross laminated timber (CLT) is gaining momentum in North America. Behind the scenes of the widely publicized project initiatives such as the Wood Innovation Design Centre Building in Canada and the recent U.S. Tall Wood Building Competition, substantial research, engineering, and development has been completed or is underway to enable the adoption of this innovative building system. This paper presents a brief overview of the current status of CLT building development in North America, highlighting some recent U.S. and Canadian...AuthorsShiling Pei, Douglas R. - Surface esterification methods of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) using acid anhydrides, acid chlorides, acid catalyzed carboxylic acids, and 101-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) activated carboxylic acids were evaluated with acetyl-, hexanoyl-, dodecanoyl-, oleoyl-, and methacryloyl-functionalization. Their grafting efficiency was investigated using Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy and 13C solid state NMR spectroscopy. Acid anhydride and CDI were found to be the most applicable reagents to graft short and long chain aliphatic carbons, respectively. The preservation of structural morphology...AuthorsShane X. - Cellulose nanomaterials (CNs) are a new class of cellulose particles with properties and functionalities distinct from molecular cellulose and wood pulp, and as a result, they are being developed for applications that were once thought impossible for cellulosic materials. Momentum is growing in CN research and development, and commercialization in this field is happening because of the unique combination of characteristics (e.g., high mechanical properties, sustainability, and large-scale production potential) and utility across a broad spectrum of material applications (e.g. as an...AuthorsRobert J. - This paper studies the agglomeration of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and uses ultrasonication to disperse CNCs in cement pastes in an attempt to improve strength. Rheological measurements show that when the concentration of CNCs exceeds 1.35% by volume in deionized water, agglomerates start to develop. This experimental finding is comparable to the value obtained from a geometrical percolation model (1.38% by volume). When the matrix phase (deionized water) is replaced with a simulated cement paste pore solution, the CNCs begin to agglomerate at a lower concentration (approximately 0.18%...AuthorsYizheng Cao, Pablo Zavattieri, Jeffrey Youngblood, Robert J. - The mechanical properties of short glass fiber/epoxy composites containing cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) made using sheet molding compound (SMC) manufacturing method as well as the rheological and thermomechanical properties of the CNC-epoxy composites were investigated as a function of the CNC content. CNC up to 1.4 wt% were dispersed in the epoxy to produce the resin for SMC production. The addition of CNC in the resin increased its viscosity and slightly reduced the heat of reaction during the polymerization without altering the curing time and temperature and the effective pot life of...AuthorsAmir Asadi, Mark Miller, Sanzida Sultana, Robert J.
