- We report Fourier transform infrared spectro-microtomography, a nondestructive three-dimensional imaging approach that reveals the distribution of distinctive chemical compositions throughout an intact biological or materials sample. The method combines mid-infrared absorption contrast with computed tomographic data acquisition and reconstruction to enhance chemical and morphological localization by determining a complete infrared spectrum for every voxel (millions of spectra determined per sample).AuthorsMichael C. - The potential for extraction of copper from wood treated with micronised, nano or soluble forms of copper has been evaluated in view of chemical remediation. In focus were EDTA, oxalic acid, bioxalate, and D-gluconic acid for extraction of Cu from treated wood. Bioxalate extractions for 24 h resulted in Cu removal over 95% for all tested materials, and the effectiveness of oxalic acid extraction was very similar to that of nano-CuO-treated wood. Bioxalate was more effective than oxalic acid in removing Cu from ACQ-D, MCQ, MCA, CA-C and Cu-ethanolamine treated wood. D-gluconic acid extractio...AuthorsSaip Nami Kartal, Evren Terzi, Bessie Woodward, Carol A. Clausen, Stan LebowKeywordsSourceHolzforschung 2014; Volume 68, Number 7: 2013; pp. 831–837.Year2013
- To investigate the potential for using purified CO2-precipitated Kraft lignin (PCO2KL) with phenol-formaldehyde (PF) for application as an adhesive in plywood production, two lignin replacement procedures were examined to assess lignin’s effect on bond quality. Methylolation and oxidation with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were carried out to try to increase lignin reactivity. The first procedure involved substitution of 30% of the PF resin solids in the adhesive mix with a solution of methylolated lignin with or without prior oxidation; the second replacement procedure involved direct condensat...AuthorsYao Chen, Charles R. - Bamboo is a biomass material and has great potential as a bio-energy resource of the future in China. Bamboo pellets were successfully manufactured using a laboratory pellet mill in preliminary work. This study was therefore carried out to investigate the effect of carbonization conditions (temperature and time) on properties of bamboo pellets and to evaluate product properties. It was concluded that carbonization conditions affected the properties of bamboo pellets. The effects of carbonization temperature on some properties such as unit mass loss, pellet absorption, bulk density, unit...AuthorsZhijia Liu, Zehui Jiang, Zhiyong Cai, Benhua Fei, Yan Yu, Xing'e LiuKeywordsSourceRenewable Energy, Volume 51, 2013; pp. 1-6.Year2013
- The ability of N’N-naphthaloylhydroxylamine (NHA) to cause mortality in Reticulitermes flavipes workers pretreated with the chitin synthesis inhibitor diflubenzuron was tested by adding two NHA dusted workers to 100 (2:100) pretreated workers fed either pure microcrystalline alpha-cellulose or diflubenzuron (0.25%) treated microcrystalline cellulose for 30 days prior to adding the two dusted termites. By day 5 post addition, there was a 50% mortality in the diflubenzuron treated termites only. By day 17, the mean survival of cellulose treated termites was 91 +/-2.8% and in the diflubenzuron...AuthorsFrederick Green, Rachel A. Arango, G.R. Esenther, M.G. Rojas, J. - While economics dictate that soy-based wood adhesives be made with soy flour, much of the recent literature on soy-based wood adhesives has involved using soy protein isolate. The obvious assumption is that the additional carbohydrates in the flour but not in the isolate only serve as inert diluents. Our studies have shown that the isolate can provide 10 times the wet bond shear strength than the soy flour at near neutral pH. Various models to explain the difference in wood adhesive performance between soy flour and purified soy products were examined. Prior studies eliminated some...AuthorsCharles R. Frihart, Linda F. Catalytic conversion wood syngas to synthetic aviation turbine fuels over a multifunctional catalyst
A continuous process involving gasification, syngas cleaning, and Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis was developed to efficiently produce synthetic aviation turbine fuels (SATFs). Oak-tree wood chips were first gasified to syngas over a commercial pilot plant downdraft gasifier. The raw wood syngas contains about 47% N2, 21% CO, 18% H2, 12% CO2, 2% CH4 and trace amounts of impurities. A purification reaction system was designed to remove the impurities in the syngas such as moisture, oxygen, sulfur, ammonia, and tar. The purified syngas meets the requirements for catalytic conversion to liquid...AuthorsQiangu Yan, Fei Yu, Jian Liu, Jason Street, Jinsen Gao, Zhiyong Cai, Jilei ZhangKeywordsSourceBioresource Technology, Volume 127, 2013; pp. 281-290.Year2013- ASTM G198, “Standard test method for determining the relative corrosion performance of driven fasteners in contact with treated wood,” was accepted by consensus and published in 2011. The method has two different exposure conditions for determining fastener corrosion performance in treated wood. The first method places the wood and embedded fasteners in a chamber at 95% relative humidity (RH), 32°C, for 120 days. The second method involves a cyclic fog, with 48 h of fog followed by 72 h of dry for 120 days. The corrosion rate of embedded metals is an extremely sensitive function of the...AuthorsSamuel L. - Rice straw pellets are the main type of biomass solid fuel and have great potential as a bioenergy resource of the future in China. But it also showed important problems because of its high content of ashes and its low gross calorific value, reducing the possibility to be used in domestic heating. It was certified that mixing different types of biomass materials was helpful to improve the properties of pellets. To improve properties of rice straw pellets and investigate the effect of mixing bamboo and rice straw on the pellet properties, some properties of pellets, manufactured using...AuthorsZhijia Liu, Xing'e Liu, Benhua Fei, Zehui Jiang, Zhiyong Cai, Yan YuKeywordsSourceRenewable Energy, Volume 55, 2013; pp. 1-5Year2013
