- The USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory has patented a technology that incorporates fiberglass-reinforced wood into the structure of wood doors and other wood building products. The process of reinforcing wood doors with epoxy and fiberglass increases the strength and durability of the product. Also, it allows the use of low-value, small-diameter wood which conserves mature forests and allows greater utilization of forest material. Since wood and steel are two material options for the construction of residential doors, we compared the potential environmental effects of both...AuthorsLynn Knight, Melissa Huff, Janet I. - It is well known that the lead contained in lead-based paint (LBP) can pose a serious human health risk if ingested. In our nation’s building infrastructure, millions of meters of high quality salvageable lumber have been coated with LBP. The study presented in this and a companion paper investigated the feasibility of producing several standardized wood product profiles, including flooring, bevel siding, and paneling, from salvaged LBP-coated wood. This paper presents the results of an evaluation of worker and workplace exposure to lead during wood remilling operations. Approximately 2180...AuthorsRobert H. Falk, John J. Janowiak, Stephen D. - Many U.S. military buildings being targeted for removal contain large quantities of potentially reusable wood materials. In this study, we evaluated approximately 2180 m (7,152 ft) of painted Douglas-fir siding salvaged from U.S. Army barracks. Utilizing a conventional woodworking molder, we evaluated the feasibility of producing several standardized wood product profiles, including flooring, bevel siding, and paneling. Evaluation of visual quality followed by remanufacture of siding coated with lead-based paint indicated that valuable wood products could be produced from the salvaged...AuthorsJohn J. - Understanding froth drainage with fibers (or simply called fiber drainage in froth) is important for improving fiber yield in the flotation deinking operation. In this study, the data of water and fiber mass in foams collected at different froth heights were used to reconstruct the time dependent and spatially resolved froth density and fiber volumetric concentration in the froth. The results revealed that fiber drainage is caused by water carryover. However, fiber drainage stopped in the upper part of the froth and at longer draining time because of decreased draining water flux, as...AuthorsJ.Y. - Biocides designed for prevention of indoor mold growth on wood-based materials need to provide long-term protection under conditions of high humidity. Specimens of kiln-dried southern pine and unseasoned southern pine, aspen, and Douglas-fir were dip-treated with borate-dimethylcocoamine (DMCA) supplemented with voriconazole, thiabendazole, or thujaplicin and evaluated at 4-week intervals for inhibition of three mold fungi, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium chrysogenum, and Trichoderma viride, using the ASTM D4445 mold test. After 8 weeks, all treatments of aspen and Douglas-fir inhibited...AuthorsCarol A. Clausen, Vina YangKeywordsSourceInternational Research Group on Wood Protection. - Properties of particleboard manufactured entirely from recycled particleboard were tested The method for processing three-layer particleboard from all-recycled particles was described. Dynamic MOE (modulus of elasticity) before and after re-manufacturing was tested by a longitudinal stress wave technique. Some stress wave techniques were compared. Nondestructive AU (acousto-ultrasonic) techniques were used to evaluate static, dynamic, and dimensional properties of re-manufactured boards. The results showed a large decrease in mechanical and physical properties for remanufactured boards...AuthorsSumire Kawamoto, James H. Muehl, R. - Serpula lacrymans (Wulfen : Fries) Schröter, the dry rot fungus, is considered the most economically important wood decay fungus in temperate regions of the world i.e. northern Europe, Japan and Australia. Previously copper based wood preservatives were the most commonly used preservatives for pressure treatment of wood for building constructions. Because of a suspicion about tolerance toward copper components, a soil block test was undertaken to clarify the effect of two copper based preservatives, copper citrate and ACQ-D, on the dry rot fungus, Serpula lacrymans compared to an alternativ...AuthorsAnne Christine Steenkjaer Hastrup, Frederick Green, Carol A. - To fully exploit the value of Raman spectroscopy for analyzing lignins and lignin containing materials, a detailed understanding of lignins’ Raman spectra needs to be achieved. Although advances made thus far have led to significant growth in application of Raman techniques, further developments are needed to improve upon the existing knowledge. Considering that lignin’s heterogeneous structure consists not only of inter-phenylpropane-unit linkages of carbon-to carbon and carbon-to- oxygen, but also of side chains with various substituent and functional groups, a study of a large number of...AuthorsUmesh P. - This study evaluated the effects of a number of chemicals on the physical and mechanical properties and fire, decay, and termite resistance of oriented strandboard (OSB) panels. Disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT), boric acid (BA), melamine phosphate (MP), and a BA/DOT mixture were sprayed onto the furnish at varying concentrations. The panels were tested for thickness swell, water absorption, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and internal bond strength according to the procedures defined by ASTMD 1037. All treated panels, except those treated with BA/DOT, were found to comply...AuthorsNadir Ayrilmis, S Nami Kartal, Theodore Laufenberg, Jerrold Winandy, Robert H. - Many federal, state, and private forests, especially in thewestern part of the United States, have an overabundance of fire-prone small-diameter trees, forest thinnings, and residual material. These materials are not being fully utilized as a fiber resource because there are few economical options for their use. This report looks at using treetop material to produce a structural fiberboard-like product by varying several pulping and refining conditions. The treetop material with barkwas processed using a wet processing method. Resin-free experimental panelswere formed and press-dried....AuthorsJohn F.
