- The interest in lignocellulosic fiber composites has been growing in recent years because of their high specific properties. In this work, a new technique was used to prepare specimen to observe the transcrystalline zones in kenaf fiber-polypropylene composites. A maleated polypropylene (MAPP) coupling agent was used to improve the stress-transfer efficiency in the composites. - Release liner waste material is found in post-consumer waste streams and is also a significant component of the preconsumer waste stream generated in the manufacturing of adhesive products. To date, very little has been reported pertaining to the behavior of release liner in paper recycling. - The weakness of existing relationships correlating off-axis modulus of elasticity E q to shear modulus G 12 for wood composite panels is demonstrated through presentation of extensive experimental data. A new relationship is proposed that performs better than existing equations found in the literature. This relationship can be manipulated to calculate the shear modulus G 12 of orthotropic specimens such as wood-based panels solely from off-axis tension (or compression) tests. - Cone calorimeter tests of wood with three different backings showed that the backing did not affect time to ignition, initial peak heat release rate (HRR), and total heat release, at four different imposed heat fluxes. However, use of dense backing board for the Steiner tunnel test eliminated the second peak in the HRR profile and prolonged the intervening period of simultaneous flaming and glowing combustion, as evidenced by a gradual increase in the heat of combustion with time. - This study verifies a single-stage reaction-rate model for the long-term effects of various fire retardants. The adequacy of predictions from our previously reported models was tested using data from fire-retardant-treated wood exposed at 66°C (150°F) and 75% relative humidity for 3 or 4 years. - A predictor sort experiment is one in which experimental units are allocated on the basis of the values of a predictor variable that is correlated with the response. Standard ANOVA analyses of predictor sort experiments can lead to confidence intervals whose actual coverages are poor matches to nominal coverages.
