- Jadeite artefacts at Maya sites are normally associated with ritual and ceremonial loca-tions, with high-quality jadeite reserved for elite objects. The discovery of a jadeite gouge with a wooden handle at a Classic Maya salt-working site submerged by sea-level rise—Ek Way Nal, Belize—is therefore unexpected and provides new information about the utilitarian use of this stone. - The pore size distribution of cell walls in softwood pulps was studied using the pressure plate technique and mercury intrusion porosimetry, which together make it possible to cover the range from 101 to 106 nm in pore sizes (mesopores and macropores). The differences in pore size distribution between never-dried pulp from a fiber line, industrially-dried pulp, and laboratory-dried pulps were evaluated. The results showed an increase in the relative pore volume (100 to 2,000 nm) between industrial washing and bleaching stages. - Chemical modification of the hydroxyl groups of wood can improve the properties of wood by providing moisture and biological resistance, as well as dimensional stability. Southern pine solid wood was chemically modified to various weight percentage gains (WPG) with epoxybutene (EpB, 8%-38% WPG). - Poplar wood was fractionated under a range of conditions using an inexpensive and recyclable commercial aromatic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH), as an acid hydrotrope (AH). The fractionated cellulose-rich solid fraction demonstrated excellent physical and optical properties as papermaking fibers. - We conducted the frst comparative exploration on lignin containing cellulose nanofibril films prepared alternatively from willow bark and wood using a highly recyclable acid hydrotrope, aqueous p-toluenesulfonic acid, as a sustainable means for isolating the nanofibrils. The nanofibrils of willow bark were hydrophobic and produced dense films of high strength under hot pressing. - Syringyl (S) lignin content and the syringyl-to-guaiacyl (S/G) lignin ratio are important characteristics of wood and lignocellulosic biomass.
