The Fireline Effectiveness Dashboard

Wildfires are becoming more frequent, larger, and more intense, endangering communities, forests, and firefighters. Fighting these fires is increasingly costly, and smoke affects air quality and public health far from the fire. This situation calls for a more strategic approach to wildfire suppression, as resources to fight them become increasingly strained. By understanding the past, we can make better-informed decisions to maximize effectiveness, enhance firefighter safety, and better protect communities and natural resources. 

This approach leads to reduced risks for firefighters, more efficient resource use, and healthier, safer communities. Research helps fight fire smarter, not just harder. The Fireline Effectiveness Dashboard provides a comprehensive view of how firelines performed in over 1000 large wildfires from 2017 to 2024. This data shows where firelines successfully contained the blaze, where they were breached, and where they were constructed but never engaged with the fire. 

A key finding is that a significant portion of constructed firelines don’t engage with the fire. This highlights potential inefficiencies in resource allocation or suggests that fire behavior may have changed course unexpectedly. Some fires saw two to three times more fireline constructed than the final perimeter. In remote areas, fireline construction might represent only a small fraction of the perimeter length. This variation highlights how firefighting strategies adapt to the values at risk. The data-driven approach of the Fireline Effectiveness Dashboard allows refining these strategies, better anticipating fire behavior, and strategically placing firelines where they are most likely to be effective.

These insights are invaluable for fire managers, leading to improved response strategies. Managers can use the dashboard to pinpoint areas for specific fireline construction techniques, considering factors like vegetation, topography, and weather patterns. The dashboard helps evaluate the effectiveness of different suppression tactics and ground-based efforts. If the held to total fireline ratio increased by 0.01, it would be equivalent to the capacity on an additional hotshot crew. In the service of the public, engaging fireline effectiveness research directly translates into safer communities and significantly reduces wildfire damage, minimizing the loss of homes and critical infrastructure. This new dashboard empowers fire management officers to strategically plan suppression activities and reduce unnecessary risks to crews, facilitating data-driven decision-making and continuous learning. This approach is crucial for cultivating fire-adapted communities that have the tools to proactively mitigate catastrophic wildfire risks and enhance overall resilience.
