Biochar webinar "Developing prescribed biochar for lead ion retention: using this biochar instead of that one” was presented by Dr. Yucheng Peng on June 27tth, 2024. The webinar was focused on Dr Peng’s research results of testing different types of biochar and studying their characteristics for retaining lead ions and other heavy metals.
Dr. Yucheng Peng is an Assistant professor at the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment at Auburn University, where he teaches performance and durability of bioproducts and packaging, sustainability, and life cycle assessment.
Dr. Peng has extensive experience in sustainable biomaterials, natural fiber (cellulose) based polymer composites, and packaging design, manufacturing, and innovation. He holds a Bachelor of Sciences from Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University, China, on Wood Science and Engineering, an M.S. from Mississippi State University in Forest Products, and a Ph.D., the University of Maine in Forest Resources. Dr. Peng’s research group at Auburn University utilizes renewable forest residues and biomass to manufacture biochar for wastewater remediation, focusing on comprehensively understanding the physicochemical properties of biochar and enhancing water quality in mining sites using biochar for heavy metal removal. His research also focuses on sustainable packaging and bioproducts to reclaim valuable polymer materials from plastic packaging waste and develop novel bio-based products replacing plastic packaging to reduce environmental footprints.
