Sediment transport through river corridors is a fundamental aspect of watershed processes that maintains healthy rivers, aquatic habitat, recreation opportunities, and water resources to downstream communities. The Rocky Mountain Research Station hosts a large dataset of sediment transport observations (both bed load and suspended load) and physical channel characteristics (streamflow, channel slope, cross-sectional dimensions, and streambed material) for rivers in the Rocky Mountains of the western United States (Idaho, Nevada, Colorado, and Wyoming). Available data and supporting information are linked below by geographic region.
RMRS hosts a variety of sediment transport data collected in mountain rivers of the western U.S. Rocky Mountain Research Station scientists have synthesized existing data from Idaho, Nevada, Colorado, and Wyoming. This research highlights the importance of sediment transport relationships and the necessity of sediment transport when considering restoration techniques for both watershed and river restoration. Specific research includes:
- Responses of sediment yields to climate change and wildfire
- Potential consequences of altered sediment yield for aquatic habitat and water resource infrastructure
- Prospects for mitigating sediment yields in forest basins

Excel spreadsheets are available here. This includes Site, Forest, Channel type, Management History, Years Sediment Collected. Please note that the data have been checked and re-checked for accuracy. Occasionally, errors are discovered and corrections will be made to the files. We will also be adding additional photographs and other data that are in preparation (after March 2014). Any corrections or updates will be noted in the “Status” file. Please check this file for the latest information on the status of the Colorado and Wyoming datasets.
