Ashley Gorge Research Natural Area
Ecological and Physical Description
A majority of the area supports vegetation belonging to this coniferous forest series as well as the Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas-fir) serie. Small areas dominated by Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa pine) as well as mountain shrub communities with scattered Pinus flexilis (limber pine) are also present, though only as minor representatives. Riparian communities dominated by Populus angustifolia (narrowleaf cottonwood) occur along the narrow corridors of Ashley Creek. Picea pungens habitat types present in Ashley Gorge are fairly unique.
