Elk Creek

The Elk Creek Research Natural Area (RNA) is within the Gospel-Hump Wilderness Area and extends from the high-water line of the Salmon River at elevation 2,000 feet (609 m) to upper slopes at the head of Elk Creek at 8,371 feet (2552 m), for an elevational difference within the RNA of 6,371 feet (1942 m). Xeric forest and grassland types are located at the lowest elevations near river level. An especially good example of the mountain mahogany/bluebunch wheatgrass  habitat type is located here. Middle and high elevations support a diverse representation of ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, grand fir, and subalpine fir forest types.
