Ecological and Physical Description
Hay Creek RNA includes the headwater, spring-fed stream system of the Middle Fork of Hay Creek and its two tributaries; the topographic relief of the Bear Lodge Mountains provides mesic habitat and supports late successional forests and major deciduous cover in addition to pine. Four community types are significant: Ponderosa pine/Bur Oak Woodland (Pinus ponderosa/Quercus macrocarpa Woodland), Ponderosa pine/Rough-leaf Ricegrass Woodland (Pinus ponderosa/Oryzopsis asperifolia Woodland), Paper birch/Beaked Hazel Forest (Betula papyrifera/Corylus cornuta Forest), and Bur oak/Ironwood Forest (Quercus macrocarpa/Ostrya virginiana Forest).
