Ecological and Physical Description

Size
370ac (150ha)
Elevation Range
7,420' (2,262m) - 8,328' (2,538m)
Primary Features

Lava Butte RNA consists of a representative subalpine peak of 8328 feet (2538 m) elevation at the head of a granitic cirque basin to the north and a basalt cirque basin to the south. The two substrates offer an exceptional opportunity to study occurrence and distribution of species on these two substrates. Not only is the geology of the RNA diverse, but so is the vegetation, with a large number of subalpine communities. The aquatic features are also diverse.
