Snowy Range Research Natural Area
Ecological and Physical Description
The Snowy Range RNA is an area of Engelmann spruce-subalpine fir forest, some of which is old-growth, and a smaller acreage of lodgepole pine. There are also small areas of grassland and shrubland and 3 small lakes. In contrast to much of the surrounding landscape, the RNA was not logged for railroad ties in previous decades. Engelmann spruce mortality from the spruce beetle outbreak in the 2010s is significant.
