Upper Pine Creek Research Natural Area
Ecological and Physical Description
The Upper Pine Creek RNA is part of one of the few roadless and ungrazed areas remaining in the Black Hills and is one of the oldest RNAs, dating to the 1930s. The RNA is primarily ponderosa pine forest with a smaller amount of white spruce forest. Aspen is found along two creeks which have riparian vegetation including tall shrub species that have been eliminated in many other places in the region due to livestock grazing.
